The first settlers to the area were the French explorers referred to today as Acadians. The city of Bathurst was named by the Honourable Lieutenant Governor, Sir Howard Douglas (1823-1831), in honor of Henry Bathurst, 3rd Earl Bathurst (1762-1834), Secretary of State for the Colonies of the British government. Construction of the Intercolonial Railway of Canada in the mid 1800s provided a fast connection of Bathurst to the rest of the world that would come to an essential element for the shipping of products from the city s principal industries, forestry and zinc mining. In 1881, the Roman Catholic Church constructed the Sacré-Coeur Cathedral.
